Last week we counted money, planted wheat seeds, and talked about how kindness helps us with Habit #7. We put into practice our Synergizing principles of creating an idea, listening to another’s idea, and then combining our ideas to build in the maker space. We learned about germination last week and will learn about pollination this week. We will practice using capital letters and punctuation and review nouns and author’s purpose. In math we will continue to practice subtraction strategies, math facts, and review graphing and shapes.

Please continue to work on and complete the E-Learning project: My 7# Habits Book. Make sure your child is creating big colorful drawing and writing complete sentences that start with a capital letter and end with punctuation. It is due Wednesday, the 21st.

We will take our Spelling Tests on Tuesday, 3/16, so please look over the list with your kids tonight and tomorrow night.

The habit of the month is habit #6: Synergize. This week we worked together playing math games that helped us practice different subtraction strategies.

This week we will read about traits people have that help them synergize with others. We will also revisit dreams about future professions. When we return from break we will be studying contractions so I will introduce them through the stories we read this week. We will also do an investigation into plants that propagate from cuttings. If you have any plants around the house that you can send in a cutting after break, that would be great.

Wednesday will be a dress down day for Cadets to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY: Spring break begins!

1st graders will finish word family activities with Dr. Seuss. We will continue to read in small groups to develop sight word recognition and fluency. In 2nd grade we will be reading more stories about world changers and civil rights activists. Second graders will be using questioning and predicting to develop their comprehension skills.

The habit of the month is habit #6 Synergize. Last week second graders read stories to first graders and they synergized to learn more together than they could learn alone. We also worked together using the math strategies “doubles facts” and “number-lines” as subtraction strategies.

For math this week, we will continue comparing addition strategies to subtraction strategies and see how they can be applied and used.  2nd grade will practice using subtraction strategies and place value understanding to perform double digit subtraction.  We will use open number lines and hundreds, tens, and ones to model subtraction. These visual representations will help students understand better what is happening numerically when we begin using equations.

2/16 Snow day e-learning assignment:

  1. We will keep the same spelling words this week. Students will write all spelling words 3 times each and read the words to an adult.
  2. Refresh our skills on time and sentence writing: Students will record three different times throughout the snow day when they are having fun. They will write the time and write a complete sentence describing the fun activity. Then students will draw a picture of the fun activity.

Please complete the snowday packet sent home Wednesday.

Please complete the Community Workers project from 2/12.

Please send in all work when we return to school for attendance purposes.

Our Habit this month is Habit #5 Seek first to understand, and then be understood. This habit reinforces the importance of listening, seeing thing from others’ point of view, and having compassion and empathy before making judgements.
